ECLCN believes that children need to learn about one's community to become productive adult citizens. We have several fundraisers that take place in the fall which reinforce this belief.
In October, we participate in the St. Jude's Trike-a-thon which teaches children safe bike lessons as well as raises money for the St. Jude's Research Hospital. This year, we raised $1,031 by riding our bikes on our outdoor track. We thank all the parents, friends, and relatives who donate to this worthy cause.
In November, we begin our unit on "Being Thankful". We learn about how fortunate we are and begin our canned and dried food drive to donate to the needy in our community.
In December, we recognize our culturally diverse community with our theme "Singing in Harmony". Throughout the month, we study traditional holidays celebrated in our community such as Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Duwali, Eid al-Adha, and Christmas throughout the world. We also celebrate Chinese New Year and Cinco de Maio later in the school year. We collect items such as books, stuffed animals, and clothing which are donated in the community. The Christmas Stocking Project also takes place this month as families take home a red stocking which they fill for a child/teen to be handed out to the community over the holidays.
Through projects such as these, we hope that our children will begin to understand that even though we are all have different songs, we can still "Sing together in perfect harmony".
